F.C. Students Graduate from  V.T. Governor’s School

Falls Church natives Carrie Bevis and Timothy Cohen of J.E.B. Stuart High School and Jiali Ma of George Mason High School graduated from the 2009 Governor’s School of Agriculture held at Virginia Tech, from June 28 – July 25.

The graduates were among 96 other rising junior and senior high school students from across Virginia. They were selected to participate in the month-long summer residential program, which is designed for gifted students interested in agriculture and natural resources.

Marshall H.S. Coach Receives Character Award

George C. Marshall High School (GCM) girls lacrosse Assistant Head Coach Nicholle Harris-Depaz has been chosen by the 2009 Fairfax County Athletic Council & Fairfax County Dept. of Community and Recreational Service to receive the Champion of Character award.

Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova will present the award during the Fairfax County Government Center ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 6. The ceremony is open to the public and begins at 6:30 p.m.

In addition to her work with GCM lacrosse teams, “Coach D” has established a summer youth camp at GCM, volunteers at Kilmer Middle School and sponsors a lacrosse-themed after-school program for elementary and middle school children in the Pimmit Hills neighborhood.

F.C. Students Enroll in ChalleNGe

Two students, Christian Roman Romero of George Mason High School and Brian Rubilar of J.E.B. Stuart High School, have recently enrolled in the statewide Commonwealth ChalleNGe.

As the Virginia component of the National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Program, it prepares at-risk teens for adult opportunities. For more information on the program, visit www.vachallenge.org.

Stuart Celebrates Back-to-School Night

J.E.B. Stuart High School will host a Back to School Night on Thursday, Oct. 1 to give parents and teachers the opportunity to meet, setting a positive tone for the new school year.

Students and parents are invited and are asked to arrive at 7 p.m. at Stuart High (3301 Peace Valley Ln., Falls Church). For more information, call 703-824-3900.

G.M.H.S. Holds Sophomore And Junior Parent Night

George Mason High School (GMHS) will hold a sophomore and junior parent night Tuesday, Oct. 6 to encourage mingling between underclassmen, parents, teachers and administrators.

The event is scheduled from 7 – 8:30 p.m. in each class’s homeroom (7124 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church). For more information, call 703-248-5500.

Trinity School National Merit Semi-finalists

Trinity School at Meadow View has two National Merit Semi-Finalists. They are Hannah Upchurch and Helen DeCellesZwerneman.

The two students are among 16,000 semi-finalists nationwide who are eligible to compete for academic scholarships.

Winners will be notified in February whether they will advance to the finalist level. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
