Flippin’ Pizza’s large, foldable slices appeal to the hungry New Yorker in each of its patrons, but it’s located in the heart of downtown Falls Church. All of that big-city flavor – sans the hustle and bustle of city living – explains the eatery’s charm. Although the house was packed, there wasn’t much noise to be heard on this Sunday afternoon; chit chat was muted by chomping mouths.
The establishment’s walls and warehouse-style ceiling are stripped to reveal every brick and winding pipe, though the touch of midnight black paint gives it a clean, sleek look. The low-dangling light fixtures and the tall black-and-white photographs of New York City that lay embedded in the brick add to Flippin’s chic appearance. Diners lounging on the cushioned bench below get a bird’s-eye view of such sites as the Manhattan Skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge.
Though it’s a larger-than-life brick oven, where the pizza pies bubble and bake, that steals the scene. It all starts with the dough – made fresh daily without oil, sugar or high-fructose corn syrup. Then come the all-natural toppings.
Pizza patrons can choose from a unique variety of melt-in-your-mouth cheeses, from whole-milk mozzarella and creamy ricotta to tangy gorgonzola and sharp parmesan. Meat lovers can add on the pepperoni, sausage or meatballs. And equally pleasing the vegetarians, Flippin’ Pizza offers mushrooms, onions, black olives, artichokes, green peppers, roasted red peppers, tomatoes, basil, fresh garlic and pesto per taste.
Flippin’s slice special promises two slices and a soda at a steal ($5.50). For guests with smaller appetites, the pizzeria offers another special consisting of one slice with either a juice or soda ($3.50).
This writer began with a slice of traditional pepperoni, followed by a slice of the Whitestone, a combination of ricotta, mozzarella, parmesan, fresh garlic and basil. The hand-flipped dough was baked thin with an airy crisp, allowing room for the toppings to shine. The pepperoni had just enough spice, and the blend of Whitestone cheeses was creamy, yet mild; the flavor provided a nice balance to the savory garlic and fresh basil.
Flippin’ Pizza encourages groups – or singles with bigger appetites – to pig out on the 18″ pizza pies. Meat lovers should stick with the so-called Red Pies ($18). Named after cities in New York, the Brooklyn is topped with pepperoni, meatballs, mushrooms and garlic, while the Bronx is covered with pepperoni, sausage, onions, black olives, green peppers, mushrooms and garlic.
Cheese aficionados can opt for one of the White Pies ($18), including the Whitestone and the Four Cheeses, a grand blend of mozzarella, parmesan, gorgonzola and ricotta. Other White Pie options include the Tomato Basil, a delicious mélange of parmesan, mozzarella, garlic, basil and freshly sliced tomatoes and the Artichoke pie, a mouth-watering mix of mozzarella, parmesan, fleshy artichoke hearts and lightly-seasoned tomato sauce.
In addition to pies, Flippin’ also offers salads and sides including a chopped salad in both individual size ($4.50) and family size ($9), mozzarella- and ricotta filled calzones ($9) and garlic knots ($3).
