Yesterday’s 6-5 loss against South County came on the heels of two solid victories for McLean High’s girls varsity softball last week in Northern Region play.

The Highlanders routed Fairfax last Friday in a 3-1 victory that opened the Northern Region play. The girls carried the momentum to Monday’s blowout 7-2 win over West Potomac High in the regional quarterfinal.

Monday’s action saw strong defensive action from left fielder Allison Wilhelm when the freshman player caught a ball deep in left field, with bases loaded, to snag the third out. Wilhelm also went one for two, with an RBI double and a sacrifice bunt.

Sophomore pitcher Jamie Bell carried McLean throughout the entire game, allowing five hits, two runs, and keeping West Potomac at bay with nine strikeouts. McLean had 11 hits in all.

The McLean team also received Liberty District awards recently, following a strong season of 22 wins and five losses. The honorees were:

  • Coach of the Year: Maurice Tawil
