Registration Deadline for Feb. 3 Election Extended
Voter registration for the special Feb. 3 election in Fairfax County has been extended to next Tuesday, Jan. 20, by the State Board of Elections, it was announced this week.
The election will be to fill the vacancy at the Chair of the Fairfax Board of Supervisors caused by the departure of U.S. Rep. Gerry Connolly, elected to the U.S. House of Representatives last November and sworn in earlier this month. County Board Vice-Chair Sharon Bulova, Board member Pat Herrity, Christopher DeCarlo and Carey Campbell are on the ballot in the Feb. 3 election, and absentee voting opens in the county on Jan. 20. Bulova who had been on the Board for 11 years, has the endorsement of Connolly and U.S. Senator Jim Webb.
Parkhomenko Files Papers for State Delegate Run
Adam Parkhomenko, 23, despite his youth a long-time Northern Virginia Democratic activist, filed papers in Arlington yesterday to run for the Virginia House of Delegates in the 47th District November. Parkhomenko said he intends to run only if incumbent Del. Al Eisenberg decides not to seek re-election. But, he said, he needed to file papers now because state law requires it be done within 10 days of accepting a campaign contribution. Parkhomenko has already rented office space in the event his campaign goes forward. A native of the Lyon Park neighborhood of Arlington, he attended Washington Lee High School and Northern Virginia Community College, and is working toward degrees from the Metropolitan Police Academy and George Mason University. An activist and volunteer for the presidential aspirations of Sen. Hillary Clinton for five years, Parkhomenko was the subject of a feature article in the News-Press when, as a 17-year-old, he launched a “Draft Hillary for President” effort in 2003.
Davis to Head Moderate GOP Group
Former U.S. Rep. Tom Davis, who chose not to seek re-election last Fall after serving since 1994 as the congressman from the 11th District of Virginia, was elected to head the Republican Main Street Partnership, a group of middle-of-the-road Republican elected officials. Davis, who became increasingly critical of the Bush administration and the focus of the GOP campaigns last year, said in a statement, “The 2006 and 2008 election results make it clear that the Republican Party must, once again, reach out to independent and centrist voters if we are to restore our congressional majorities and return a Republican to the White House.” Davis also teaches a course at George Mason University and recently took a position as a director with Deloitte Consulting, heavily involved in federal contracting for financial services.
Gas Line Break Shuts Down Route 7
A construction accident causing a break in a six-inch gas line to the so-called “Flower Building” at 800 W. Broad St. (Rt. 7) shut down heavy afternoon traffic in both directions for more than 10 minutes Tuesday, and west-bound lanes remained closed for another 30 minutes. It was not a major break, and involved a small line, according to City of Falls Church officials.
Inauguration Role for Bishop Robinson Hailed
Upon learning that U.S. Episcopal Church Bishop Gene Robinson accepted the invitation of President-elect Barack Obama to deliver the invocation at the first inaugural event Obama will attend this weekend, Joe Solomonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign said, “Bishop Robinson models what prayer should be: spiritual reflection put into action for justice. It is encouraging that the president-elect has chosen this spiritual hero for all Americans to lead the nation in prayer at the Lincoln Memorial inaugural event.” The event is a Sunday concert at the Lincoln Memorial. Bishop Robinson, a member of the Human Rights Campaign Religion Council, is the first openly-gay priest to be ordained bishop by a major Christian denomination.
Fairfax Foreclosure Info Meeting Jan. 27
Fairfax County officials will host a foreclosure information meeting for homeowners and renters who live in the county on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 7 p.m. at the South County Center, 8350 Richmond Highway, Alexandria.
