Smitty’s Building Supply, which has been in business since 1975, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. According to a letter from Rick Smith, Smitty’s CEO, the move was caused by the decline in the housing market coupled with debt associated with acquisitions. The reorganization will enable Smitty’s to obtain financing and secure protections to enable them to continue operations and be competitive in the marketplace. Smitty’s is headquartered in Alexandria and has locations in McLean, Manassas, McLean, Rockville, and has a window division in Falls Church.
