Falls Church Resident and FCHS Teacher Dies at 89

Bernard Howard Garhart, Jr. died on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 in Falls Church, half way through his 90th year.

He was born in Sharon, Pa., to the late Anna Madden and Bernard H. Garhart Sr. He was the beloved husband for 64 years to Anne Murray Garhart, and father of Falls Church resident Cathy Quinn and her husband Paul, Carol, Chuck (Cindy), Rick (Joanne) and Ben Garhart. He was the grandfather of David (Karen) and Matthew Quinn; Sean (Johann), Brian (Gail), Thomas (Angie) and Erin Mooney; Rachele, Jessica and Shane Chris, Dana, Anna & Sam Garhart. Great grandfather of Megan and Caitlin Mooney.

Bernard “Bus” Garhart was a WWII Veteran, recipient of aPurple Heart, Silver Star, and an Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters. He was in the “Most Decorated” one mission crew in Air Force history. He was a long time member of St. James Parish and a mathematics teacher and sports coach at Falls Church High School for 28 yrs. He moved his family to the City of Falls Church in 1948 and lived there until 1976. “Bus” and Anne returned to Falls Church City in 2005.

Graveside services will be held on Nov 5, 2008 at 3 p.m. at the Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in his memory go to Capital Hospice, P.O. Box 1576, Merrifield, Va. 22116-1576.
