Beyond the Garden Gate, an independently owned and operated gift shop located at 450 W. Broad Street, is closing its doors after five years in business, the last 19 months in its present location. Owner Lani Phillips, a popular local business owner and member of the Greater Falls Church Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, is closing its doors at the end of October. Chicken Out Rotisserie will not rebuild its Falls Church restaurant at 1202 W. Broad Street which was closed due to extensive fire damage. A local bank is pursuing approvals to tear down the stand-alone building in West Falls Plaza and rebuild on the same site. The space is owned by Federal Realty Investment Trust. The Falls Church KFC and the Pizza Hut have closed their Falls Plaza restaurants due to poor sales in those locations. Both KFC, which was located at 1120 E. West Broad Street, and Pizza Hut, which was located at 1216 W. Broad Street are part of Yum! Brands, Inc., the world's largest restaurant system with over 32,500 KFC, A&W All-American Food™, Taco Bell, and Long John Silver's restaurants. M&M Floors, a family owned business specializing in custom hardwood floors, has moved from its location in the West End Plaza after more than 30 years of business in Falls Church. The Falls Church Staples located at 1104 W. Broad Street is expanding into the space previously occupied by AutoZone (formerly Track Auto). Staples, Inc., which invented the office superstore concept, is the world's largest office products company. The expanded space is expected to be open in early to mid October. The Falls Church design/build firm Hemphill & Associates was honored by the Arlington County Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board with an Arlington Preservation Design Award. These awards are given annually to projects "exhibiting the highest standards of architectural design, quality of workmanship and execution, and adherence to preservation standards".
