The George Mason High School Athletic Hall of Fame Nominating Committee has announced that one team and seven athletes will be inducted into the Hall during ceremonies to be held in the Mustang Gym at the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School on Saturday, September 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The inductees will also be recognized the previous night at Mason’s football game against Region B rival Luray High School at 7:30 p.m.
In what will be their fourth Hall of Fame class of inductees, Mason brings in some of the best talent from the past two decades into one room to be honored. The enshrined will include the 1980 State Class AA baseball champions, the first and only Mason baseball team to win a state championship.
Jim Davis, class of 1970, was the first state wrestling champion from Mason and a two-time All-District football lineman, while Andy Schwind (’72), a four-year varsity letter winner in football, wrestling, and track and field, a state wrestling champion and two-time All-District football player will also be honored.
Vicki Spevacek (‘94), a first team All-State in basketball and the first Mason girl to score more than 1,000 points in her career, as well as a four-time basketball and two-time tennis MVP will also be honored by the Mason Athletic Boosters. Two members of the 1995 state runner-up basketball team will join Spevacek as inductees, as Sarah Jackson (‘96), a first team All-State and co-MVP on the squad, and Jennifer Williams Persson (’96), the State Player of the Year and first team All-State on the ’95 team that went 28-1.
Charissa Bautista Alexander (‘97) played basketball and track and field star, and won the state 400 meters championship as well as helping the state championship 1,600 meters relay team to victory in 1996. Alexander holds or shares three Mason records in the 400 meters, 1,600 meters relay and high jump.
Eddie Jordan (’97), a multi-sport athlete who holds numerous baseball records was first-team All-State and first-team All-Met his senior year in baseball and later starred in baseball at Division I George Mason University. Brad Guckenberger (‘99), a star in football, baseball, power lifting, and wrestling, will be the final athlete to be inducted. Guckenberger was second team All-State in football and baseball his senior year, as well as ranking as the top scorer in Northern Virginia in football his junior year.
Hors d’oeuvres and beverages will be served at the ceremony. Tickets are $15.00 per person (to cover the costs of the food and the event) and must be purchased or reserved in advance no later than Monday, September 24.
