Dreaming of Sports

The Diamond Dream Foundation is joining forces with the Fairfax County Department of Community and Recreation Services and Fairfax County Public Schools to add a sports element to the Fairfax County Middle School After-School Program. The Foundation will host its first Baseball/Softball Summer Clinic on Friday, August 10 from 10 a.m. to Noon at Liberty Middle School (6801 Union Mill Road, Clifton, Va.), introducing the sports to middle school students and teaching them fundamental skills. The after-school program is currently offered at every public middle school in Fairfax County and gives students a positive, alternative place to go after the regular school day, five days a week.

The Northern Virginia Swimming League All Stars competed at Wakefield Chapel on August 4.

In the Eight and Under Girls 25-Meter Freestyle, Maddie Cherry of Lee-Graham placed fourth with a time of 17.2 seconds. Michael Southern of Lee-Graham (32.35) earned fifth place in the Nine-10 Boys 50-Meter Freestyle. McLean swimmer Jack McCarron took fifth with a time of 29.74 in the 11-12 Boys 50-Meter Freestyle. In the 11-12 Girls 50-Meter Freestyle, Dylan Staniszewski of Sleepy Hollow B&R (30.12) took home third place. Freddy Crawford of Lee-Graham swam a time of 25.94 in the 13-14 Boys 50-Meter Freestyle, placing second. In the 13-14 Girls 50-Meter Freestyle, Megan Howard of Tuckahoe (28.68) and Susha Stone of Lee-Graham (29.11) earned first and third place respectively.

The winner of the Eight and Under Girls 25-Meter Backstroke was Libby Ulrich of McLean with a time of 20.89. Andrew Seliskar of McLean swam a time of 34.26 in the 9-10 Boys 50-Meter Backstroke, winning first place. Overlee swimmer Kayla Rusby-Wood (38.26) placed third in the 9-10 Girls 50-Meter Backstroke. Marilisa Morales of Woodley (34.09) took second place in the 11-12 Girls 50-Meter Backstroke. The winner of the 13-14 Girls 50-Meter Backstroke, Tuckahoe swimmer Eva Greene, came in with a time of 31.93. In the 15-18 Girls 50-Meter Backstroke, Hilary Fritz of McLean (31.68) placed second and Anna Macedonia of Lee-Graham (31.94) took fourth.

Overlee swimmer Michaela Morrison won first place with a time of 22.88 in the Eight and Under Girls 25-Meter Breaststroke. In the 9-10 Girls 50-Meter Breaststroke, Megan Harrigal of Sleepy Hollow B&R ranked fifth with a time of 44.71. Jack McCarron of McLean (37.33) placed fourth in the 11-12 Boys 50-Meter Breaststroke. Lee-Graham swimmer Natalie Leake (35.04) came in second, while Tuckahoe swimmer Karen Schirm (36.42) tied for third place in the 13-14 Girls 50-Meter Breaststroke. In the 15-18 Girls 50-Meter Breaststroke, Maggie Macedonia of Lee-Graham ranked second with a time of 34.82. Abigail Ortmayer of Overlee followed in third with a time of 35.27.

In the Eight and Under Boys 25-Meter Butterfly, Nathan Bass of Sleepy Hollow B&R took fifth place with a time of 20.65. Overlee swimmers Andrew Loranger (16.68) and Ryan Baker (16.87) placed fourth and fifth respectively in the 9-10 Boys 25-Meter Butterfly. Eli Bass of Sleepy Hollow B&R (33.04) earned fifth in the 11-12 Boys 50-Meter Butterfly. The winner of the 13-14 Boys 50-Meter Butterfly was Freddy Crawford of Lee-Graham with a time of 27.73. Megan Howard of Tuckahoe (30.66) earned the winning title of the 13-14 Girls 50-Meter Butterfly. Sleepy Hollow B&R swimmer Angela Slevin (31.78) took third place.

With a time of 1:15.53, Andrew Seliskar of McLean came in first place in the 9-10 Boys 100-Meter Individual Medley. In doing so, he broke his own record of 1:15.56 that he achieved on July 28 in the Division 3 Championships. Michael Southern of Lee-Graham (1:23.55) placed fourth. In the 9-10 Girls 100-Meter Individual Medley, Megan Harrigal of Sleepy Hollow B&R (1:24.96) earned second. Sleepy Hollow B&R swimmer Eli Bass took fifth in the 11-12 Boys 100-Meter Individual Medley with a time of 1:14.26. Dylan Staniszewski of Sleepy Hollow B&R (1:13.80) came in second in the 11-12 Girls 100-Meter Individual Medley. In the 13-14 Girls 100-Meter Individual Medley, Eva Greene earned first place (1:09.65) and Lee-Graham swimmer Natalie Leake came in a close second (1:10.31). In the 15-18 Girls 100-Meter Individual Medley, Maggie Macedonia of Lee-Graham placed third with a time of 1:07.72, while Hilary Fritz of McLean earned fifth with 1:08.83.
