Governor Timothy M. Kaine announced the formation of a Broadband Roundtable charged with developing a "last-mile" telecommunications blueprint for advancing his goal of ensuring broadband access for every Virginia business. The Roundtable, to be led by former Governor Mark Warner and Virginia Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra, will be supported by national expert Dr. Ted Rappaport and Karen Jackson, Director of the Commonwealth’s Office of Telework Promotion and Broadband Assistance. Roundtable members will include leaders from state and local government, business, and education, and announcement of additional members will be made soon. Business Development Assistance Group, Inc. (BDAG) a non-profit based in Arlington, and Northern Virginia Community College’s Annandale Campus-based Workforce Development and Continuing Education Division, have announced the 5th Multicultural Business Conference scheduled for Thursday, August 2, 2007 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at NOVA’s Ernst Community Cultural Center, 8333 Little River Turnpike, Annandale. The conference will offer a series of workshops to help small, woman and minority owned businesses get in the Commonwealth’s electronic procurement system (eVA), get certified and learn how to navigate through the procurement system. This year, the theme is “Access to Business Success: Expanding Business Opportunities with State and Local Government Agencies for Small Business”. In Virginia, the Fourth Quarter of Fiscal Year 2006, state agencies reported spending $123.9 million (10.2%) with small businesses, $ 27.8 million (2.03%) with minority-owned firms, and $ 24.6 million (2.03%) with woman-owned companies. The Greater Falls Church Chamber of Commerce’s Mini-Golf Family Fun Night at Upton Hill was rescheduled for Thursday, June 21 from 5:00 – 7:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority, Bentley’s Family Restaurant, and Robeks Healthy Eats. The community is invited to play some miniature golf, enjoy dinner and then attend the Concert and Art in the Park at Cherry Hill afterwards. The Mini Golf event tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for youth 12 – 18, $12 for kids 6-12 and free for kids under 5. Tickets are available by calling 703-532-1050 before 3:00 p.m. the day of the event. The events at Cherry Hill are free and reservations are not required.


Harris Corporation has completed $400 million acquisition of Multimax Inc., an information technology company in Herndon. Multimax is being combined with Harris’ technical services business to form a new organization — Harris Information Technology Services. The organization, to be headquartered in Falls Church, will serve the information technology outsourcing needs of the U.S. government. Multimax generated $315 million in revenue for 12 months as of March 31. It employs about 1,100 people, 85 percent of which have government security clearances. Harris Corp., based in Melbourne, FL, provides communications products, systems, and services to government and commercial customers such as Clear Channel Communications, Sony, and Lockheed Martin. R2i.ntegrated, a digital marketing communications and technology firm, has opened an office in Falls Church, thereby extending its presence from the Baltimore area to the Washington region. The new Northern Virginia office employs six people currently, and it is expected to grow by another six workers within a year. R2i.ntegrated, a company formed from the recent merger of Internet marketing and creative services firm Round2 Communications and Web software development company Bi4ce, has a total of 42 employees. The combined company has an office in Columbia and is also eyeing a future office in New York. While the Falls Church location will focus on managing operations and business development efforts in the Northern Virginia market, certain aspects of the company’s corporate functions will take place at the new office as well.
