Jags Hang 21 Runs on Raiders

The Falls Church varsity baseball team piled on a whopping 21 runs against rival J.E.B. Stuart, turning a 6-5 second-inning score into a lopsided final margin Tuesday night. The game featured a number of errors by both teams, but the Falls Church bats made the Raiders pay for their mistakes with some timely hitting, including two grand slams from David Acosta and Andrew Hirsch.

Acosta and Reece Long turned in perfect days at the plate for Falls Church, going 4 for 4 and 5 for 5 respectively. The Jags’ Bobby Stefanowicz (3 for 3) chipped in with three RBI.

Acosta struck out eight to pick up the win on the mound.

Mustangs Drop First District Game Since ‘05

A pair of seventh-inning errors and a seeing-eye single contributed to a rare blown save by George Mason High School ace Byron Mendenhall in a 3-2 defeat on the baseball diamond at Rappahannock County on Friday, April 13. The loss by the Mustangs (4-3) was the first to a Bull Run District opponent since 2005.

“It was a game that we should have won, but did not deserve to win,” Mason Head Coach Adam Amerine said.

Mason junior Mike Straub gave up just four hits over 5 2/3 innings, but Rappahannock starter Ethan Russell matched him, striking out 14 batters for the Panthers (8-2). Mason led 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two unearned runs, before Rappahannock rallied to take the win.

The Mustangs played a make-up game against Briar Woods Wednesday, April 18, but the results were not available at press time. That game began a stretch of four games in four days for Mason, all on the road, which culminates Saturday against Potomac School.

Rapp. Matches Mason at One in District Opener

A strong showing by Rappahannock County and a slow start by the Mustangs left the George Mason High School varsity boys soccer team with a 1-1 draw to open Bull Run District play on April 13.

Alex Casteuble recorded Mason’s lone marker with an unassisted goal (a blast into the upper corner from 22-yards out) at the 60th minute. That goal knotted the score at one, but the Mustangs couldn’t break through in the remaining time.

Three days earlier Mason fell to a talented squad from AAA Washington-Lee by a 3-0 margin. The score would have been more lopsided if not for the performance of Mason senior keeper Eric Casteuble, who turned aside 11 shots to keep the score relatively close.

Mustangs Dominate Latest Matches

The Mason High boys varsity tennis team rolled to victories in its two latest matches April 11 and 13 against Brentsville and Stone Bridge respectively, prevailing in both instances by 8-1 margins. Mason’s Daniel Butler and John Vroom triumphed in a back and forth doubles match that was ultimately resolved in a tie-breaker. The Mustangs travel to Clarke County for one of their two district matches of 2007 this Thursday, April 19.

Mason Girls Squeak By Brentsville

The George Mason High School girls varsity tennis team won a close, 5-4, match against Brentsville April 11. Michelle Repper, Yesha Shrestha, Annie Zweighaft and Alina Kaye all picked up wins during their singles matches, then Repper and Anna Duning clinched the victory with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles.
