Mason High Edges FCHS, 3-1

(Photo: News-Press)The highly anticipated pitchers’ duel between Falls Church and George Mason High Schools, with FCHS ace David Acosta and GMHS stud starter Byron Mendenhall combining for 20 strikeouts in the game. In the end, the Mustangs prevailed 3-1 in both teams’ return to action following spring break.

Acosta fanned 10 Mason hitters while going the distance for Falls Church, giving up just four hits, but the Mustangs managed to eke out three runs on RBI from Matt Dorr (2-for-2), Alex Prewitt (1-3) and Lonnie Millard.

Mendenhall went five strong innings, striking out 10 Jaguar batters while scattering three hits. Mike Straub took over in the top of the sixth, giving up one hit and striking out two in his two innings of work to pick up the save.

At the plate for Falls Church, Reece Long, Joe Wilkerson, Andrew Hirsch and Rich Evans all picked up hits, with Dwight Bell driving in the Jaguars’ lone run.

The win ran Mendenhall’s record to a perfect 3-0 on the season.

The Mustangs (4-2 overall) begin play in the Bull Run District this Friday when the team travels to Rappahannock for a 5 p.m. game. That matchup begins a six-game string of road games for Mason before the team returns home to face Broad Run April 26 at 5 p.m.

The Jaguars (2-9) faced Loudon Valley Wednesday night in a National District contest at Falls Church. Results of that contest were not available at press time. Falls Church next takes on Yorktown at home this Friday at 7 p.m.
