Mason Wrestlers Head to Regionals

Seven of nine George Mason High School wrestlers qualified for the Regional Tournament after strong performances at the Bull Run District Championships last Saturday. The Mustangs finished fourth overall as a team in the meet, with first place going to host Manassas Park.

Among the winners for Mason was senior Ramsey Hanna, who took home first place for his 160-lbs. weight class. After pinning his opponent from Rappahannock in 1:01, Hanna won 20-2 against a Madison County wrestler before defeating a foe from Strasburg in the final, 5-4, to capture the top spot.

Juniors Barrett Kennett and Steve Parks, wrestling at the 171- and 189-lbs. weight classes, as well as senior captain Rick Schumann (215 lbs.) all took home second place finishes in the meet and will join Hanna in the Region B Tournament.

Also placing for the Mustangs were sophomore Jake Schwind, who took home a third place finish in the 140-lbs. weight division. Senior Andy Millar returned from recent knee surgery and posted an impressive fourth-place finish. Sophomore Manny Yusopov, senior Roger O’ Brien and sophomore Tim Hillegass rounded out the Mason squad with finishes of fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

The Region B tournament will take place this Saturday at Strasburg High School.
