Mason Wrestlers Pin Rapp., Parks Fourth at Ram Rumble

With a number of forfeits by both teams in various weight classes, the George Mason High School varsity wrestling team won every contested match in a Jan. 25 head-to-head meet with Rappahannock and claimed a 42-23 victory.

The Mustangs’ Yanny Yusopov prevailed in the 130-lb. weight class after his opponent took a fall 1:54 in. Tim Hillegass (135 lbs.) and Steve Parks (189 lbs.) each won their matches on points, 8-5 and 5-3 respectively. Meanwhile, Jake Schwind (145 lbs.) won after his opponent took a fall at 1:28. Rick Schumann (215 lbs.) pinned his foe 1:33 seconds into the match.

Mason also claimed forfeits at the 152, 160 and 171 lbs. weight classes.

A pair of Mustangs also achieved some individual success this past week as part of a nine-wrestler team that attended the Ram Rumble Wrestling Tournament at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg.

Parks built on his success against Rappahannock and earned a fourth-place finish in the 189-lbs. division. Barratt Kennett also placed for Mason, finishing seventh in the 171-lbs. weight class.

The Mustangs return to the friendly confines of Mason High School for their next meet, this Saturday against four schools: Benedictine, Yorktown, Stonewall and Freedom. The meet begins at 10 a.m.
