Kirov Ballet’s “Romeo and Juliet,” Kennedy Center, performances through Sunday.
St. Petersburg’s Kirov Ballet has been legendary for over 200 years, and now it comes for a limited appearance to the Kennedy Center for a full-length production of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” performed to the music of Sergei Prokofiev. The performances is part of the Shakespeare in Washington series. This particular production was prepared specifically for this ballot troupe in 1940 by Leonid Lavrovsky. Forget the football games this weekend. Take the kids for some exposure to the best ballet there is. You may discover that one of them, or maybe you, is a Billy Elliot lurking in a dumb jock body only waiting to be awakened.
