Stuart Runners Make History, Advance to First-Ever State Race

In 48 years of Stuart cross country history, a male runner has never represented the Raiders at the Virginia High School League State Cross Country Championships.

So this Saturday when not one, but two Raider runners cross the finish line at Great Meadows in The Plains, Va., history will be made for the program regardless of their times.

However, the duo of junior Abiy Mohamed and senior captain Ethan Rissell both ran outstanding races at last weeks regional and since qualifying for states, have set their sights even higher.

At last week’s race Mohamed lowered the school record time to an impressive 15:37 over the three-mile course while Rissell staged a dramatic comeback to clinch a state bid, finishing in 15th with a time of 15:41.

With the culmination of the regional race, seniors Mustansar Haidat (17:13), Andy Moy (17:20), and John Tran (18:20) cap off three outstanding years of Stuart varsity running, including a regular season record of 14-0 this year.

Only four schools in the Northern Region will have more runners in the State meet this weekend than Stuart, who placed 14th overall as a team in the regional.
