Mustangs Advance With Tourney Win

Despite falling to Bull Run District Rival Strasburg High School in the regular season finale last Thursday, the George Mason High School volleyball team rebounded on Tuesday to defeat Manassas Park in three games to advance to the second round of the Bull Run District Tournament.

In battling the Rams, Mason came away with a solid effort, but fell 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25.

“The girls played a fantastic game and gave it their whole effort,” Mason Coach Lauren Luck said following the game. “I am very, very proud of them for winning a game against Strasburg.”

The Rams, one of the elite programs in the area, improved to 19-1 on the season.

Junior Annie Zweighaft led the team in serves with 15 and three aces. Senior Brittany Head and sophomore Tegan Argo passed up 25 and 26 balls respectively.

Senior Katie Mitchell led the team with 12 kills, followed by fellow senior Sabrina Whitney’s 10. Junior Bailey Walton and sophomore Kim Kenny each contributed three blocks. Walton and Kenny lead the team in blocks this season.

On Tuesday night, in the first round of the Bull Run District tournament, the Mustangs played their final home game against the Manassas Park Cougars, wining easily in three straight sets.
“All teammates contributed to the win, and it was a good way to end the season at home,” Luck said.

The Mustangs’ next game will be at Rappahannock High on Thursday for the second round of the districts. Potentially, a win would mean the Mustangs would advance to the Regional tournament for the first time in years.
