The George Mason High School varsity volleyball team has exploded from the gates this season, posting a perfect mark of 4-0 to open 2006. After rolling over Wakefield in three games (25-8, 25-13, 25-11), the Mustangs bested Yorktown and Briar Woods. The latter match against Briar Woods required to the team to display its grit, rallying from a game down to win the final two games and claim the match 25-12, 17-25, 19-25, 25-14, 15-6.
In Mason’s more recent match on Tuesday night, the Mustangs downed Seton High School behind a 90-percent-plus serving effort from Annie Zweighaft. Katie Mitchell contributed 11 kills, while Kim Kenny and Bailey Walton each added a pair of blocks.
“The key to our success was really the incredible play of our two main back row players, Brittany Head and Tegan Argo,” Mason Head Coach Lauren Luck said. “[They] seem to spend most of their time during games sprawled out on the floor.”
Mason’s rapid-fire schedule pitted the Mustangs against Rappahannock on Wednesday night in the team’s Bull Run District opener. Results were not available at press time, though Luck has high aspirations for the season given their fast start.
“Behind the leadership of our four seniors [Head, Mitchell, Sabrina Whitney, Lisa Razzi], the team has already brought itself back to how they were playing at the end of last season,” Luck said.
