Evelyn Volpe died on Feb. 10, 2013. She was 100 years old.

Evelyn was born on Dec. 6, 1912, to Samuel and Breta Minnick. She grew up in Hightstown, New Jersey, and graduated from the local high school in 1930.

While she was in training to be a nurse, she met her future husband, Joseph Volpe Jr., when he was a patient in a New Jersey hospital. They were married in 1937. During World War II, their first child, Joseph III, was born in Newark, New Jersey. Soon after, the family moved to Alexandria to be near Washington, D.C., where Joe worked as a lawyer on the Manhattan Project that built the atomic bomb. Following a brief return to New Jersey after the war, Joe returned to Washington, D.C. to work for the Atomic Energy Commission and the family took up residence in Arlington.

Their son Michael was born in Washington, D.C., and the family remained in Arlington until the early 1970s, when Joe and Evelyn separated. Evelyn moved to Reston, Virginia, where she remained following a divorce until moving to Falls Church in 1983. She joined Falls Church Presbyterian Church and was active in the Women’s Association. She also volunteered at the Mental Health Association of Northern Virginia in Falls Church. In 2004 she moved to assisted living in Arlington, where she remained until her final illness.

Before health problems limited her physical activities, Evelyn was an avid bowler and golfer. She loved to knit and to read, and she maintained a keen interest in current events and in activities at the church. She was a Redskins fan to the last, and she paid special attention her Wall Street investments.

She is survived by her two sons, Joseph Volpe III of Warrenton and Michael Volpe (Margaret) of Falls Church; five grandchildren, Lisa, Laurie, Joseph, Kate, and Charlotte; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 p.m. at Falls Church Presbyterian Church, and her mortal remains will be interred at Oakwood Cemetery in Falls Church.
