Future of Sunoco Station Site Up in Air

Sources have reported to the News-Press this week that the Shreve family property on the southeast corner of N. West and W. Broad in Falls Church, including the site of the Currle family-owned City Sunoco, has been sold to the B. F. Saul Company for a rumored $8 million, although the sale won’t be finalized until the end of the year. B. F. Saul has tentative plans to build a mixed-use structure there anchored by a Chevy Chase Bank, but although there have been informal talks with the City of Falls Church’s Planning Department, no filings for a special exception or building permit have been made. According to reports, the move to acquire the site that also includes the small strip shopping building next door was originally part of an attempt to block a prospective move by the Virginia Commerce Bank to the location. Now, however, Commerce Bank has made other plans to move into the ground floor of The Byron a few blocks away, and it is unclear if that has changed Chevy Chase’s plans for the Sunoco site. Also, City Sunoco has a current lease on its location that runs through 2011.
