Meridian Spring Sports Underway As Softball, Soccer Pick Up Early Wins

Spring sports have officially begun at Meridian High School, with the Mustang baseball,
softball, soccer, and lacrosse squads among the many who will be in action over the course of the
next two months. Unfortunately, this season comes with a slight hurdle for one of the primary
attractions – that being the baseball team, who will be playing its home games at Capital One
Ballpark in Tysons Corner until further notice due to construction on Meridian’s field.
Nevertheless, hopes are high for them and plenty of additional Mustang programs, and the early
portion of the schedule in particular should be packed with high-quality matchups. Let’s take a
look at how everybody came out of the gates.
The aforementioned baseball team has yet to play a scheduled home game as it is, as the
boys faced Kettle Run on Tuesday and Washington-Liberty on Saturday, both on the road. Both
games were losses, by scores of 13-4 and 16-0, but they’ll have an opportunity to bounce back
on Wednesday when they play Fauquier at their temporary home. Their counterparts on the
softball field, meanwhile, lost their opener to Kettle Run 6-0 on Monday but entered the win
column with a 17-3 victory over Annandale Wednesday, both games on the road. They’ll play
Fauquier this Wednesday and then Oakton on Thursday for their first home action of 2025.
On the soccer field, the boys opened their season with a 1-0 home win against
Washington-Liberty on Monday, before losing by the same score on the road at Annandale the
next night and then taking a 2-1 victory over Rock Ridge on Friday to climb to 2-1 on the year.
The girls’ games have featured a bit more scoring, as they rebounded from a 4-1 loss to
Annandale Tuesday with an 8-0 win at Rock Ridge on Friday to start out 1-1. Both teams will be
off this week as their scheduled matchups against Potomac Falls were canceled.
Finally, both lacrosse squads played James Madison in their openers, though neither were
able to start off with a win over their strong Class 6A opponent. The boys lost 16-5 at home
Wednesday while the girls fell in a 14-13 nailbiter on the road that same night, but both teams
figure to be highly competitive in their regions this season. Their next chance to put a number in
the win column will be against Alexandria City on Monday, where this time the boys will be
traveling while the girls try to defend home turf.
