After opening their season with a hard-fought 14-13 loss to James Madison on the road
last Wednesday, the Meridian High School girls’ lacrosse team played its home opener on
Monday. Facing the Titans from Alexandria City on a cloudy, overcast evening, it was a prime
opportunity to enter the win column for the first time in 2025.
Ally Campbell and Ava Rosenbusch were both up to the task, each scoring twice early on
while Lila Deering added a fifth tally within the first four minutes. Alexandria finally got on the
board just after Campbell had scored her third, bringing the score to 6-1, but Meridian got three
more to make it 9-3 at the end of a fast-paced opening period. The Titans managed to stop the
bleeding in the second frame, but Deering scored twice and Campbell added another to help the
Mustangs lead 14-7 at halftime.
Things slowed down a bit in the third quarter, and Alexandria climbed within 16-10, but
that was as close as they’d get. Meridian scored the first three of the final frame – including two
more from Campbell, bringing her to eight on the night – and the Mustangs held off both the
opposition and the threatening skies to win by a final score of 22-11.
Campbell would end up with a total of ten goals, accounting nearly half of Meridian’s
scoring and almost outpacing Alexandria all by herself. Rosenbusch added four, while Deering
and Zoe Gale each had three. The Mustangs will now have a quick turnaround as they hit the
road again tomorrow night to face Riverside.
