Beyer Statement on Donald Trump’s Threat to Metro

October 31, 2024 (Washington, D.C.) – Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA), whose 8th District in Northern Virginia is home to the Silver, Orange, Blue, and Yellow lines, issued the following statement today following reports of the devastating effects Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda would have on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA):

“Metro is essential to the National Capital Region’s success and prosperity. It is a major driver of our local economy, is fundamental to the livelihoods of millions of residents in the region who use it to access jobs, schools, and services, and helps relieve congestion on our already overburdened roads.

Donald Trump’s Project 2025 proposal to eliminate the federal funding WMATA depends on would lead to crippling service reductions and deteriorating infrastructure, making it harder for people to commute and for the region to function. Further, purging Metro services could cost the region billions in economic activity by reducing job access and slowing the movement of goods.

Metro is the public transportation system for our nation’s capital. In the face of Project 2025’s unprecedented threats, we must stand firm in defending and investing in Metro and the critical role it plays in the lives of Northern Virginians and the National Capital Region’s economy at large.”
