Editor’s Update: 9-10-2024

Of course, among all the punditry in advance of tonight’s debate, it can so easily be demonstrated that male supremacist sexism is alive and well as the standards set for defining success tonight are so radically different for Trump than for Harris, as I will do my best to continue to document in this space.

Doozey of the day goes to the FT’s Gideon Rachman, who muses about Trump in the last debate (with Biden) in his piece, “Harris Has to Dazzle in The Debate,” that “while he delivered his usual stream of lies and and non-sequiturs, he also came across as more disciplined and quicker on this feet.” The foul belongs to the phrase, “While he delivered his usual stream of lies.” What? A candidate for President of the United States is allowed to lie in public, and the media reports it as merely “his usual!” Outrageous, and if you don’t think so, then you’ve been conditioned exactly as the Trump machine wants you to be!

Rachman goes on to note that Trump, on the other hand, is “trying hard to define Harris as a San Francisco liberal and ‘DEI’ candidate who has risen to the top because she is a Black woman, rather than on merit” (DEI standing for diversity, equity and inclusion).

Meanwhile, The Post’s Eugene Robinson, in “Three Radical Trump Policies Americans Can’t Ignore,” identifies Trump’s latest take on halting immigration by deporting up to 12 million, on retaliation against his political enemies, and on blanket tariffs as tickets to disaster that shows a second Trump term “won’t just be bad, it will be much, much worse.”

Meanwhile, Alex Rogers writing for the Financial Times from D.C. reports that Leonard Leo, the Federalist Society demon who orchestrated the three conservative appointments to the Supreme Court under Trump, has set up a $1 billion non-profit, the Marble Freedom Trust, “that is now funding the conservative mission against private institutions opposing DEI policies.”
