Donald Trump’s press conference today revealed a man who is demonstrably unfit to hold public office, if not all along, surely by now. The lies and exaggerations he told on the record should make this clear to anyone who is not a diehard Trump cultist. Evidence of his escalating  mental decline was on full display. It reflects the strange fact that he has not campaigned in any battleground state all this week.

Media coverage of today’s fiasco was limited to brief snippets by Trump in which it appears he made sense, while acknowledging that he “told a number of untruths,” something that apparently they assume are supposed to be used to by now and so barely matters anymore in their view.

But the reality is that the polls are showing dramatic improvements for his opponents, the Harris-Walz ticket, even as Trump’s vice presidential pick continues to flounder.
