President Biden took to the opinion pages of the Washington Post today, headlining a piece “My Plan to Reform the Supreme Court and Ensure No President is Above the Law,” that spells out three major reforms in laws governing the U.S. Supreme Court.
1. Reverse the current SCOTUS ruling granting presidential immunity. “I share our Founder’s belief that the president’s power is limited, not absolute. We are a nation of laws, not of kings or dictators.”
2. Term limits of 18 years, the U.S. now “being the only major constitutional democracy that gives lifetime seats to its high court…It would reduce the chance that any single presidency radically alters the makeup of the court for generations to come.”
3. A binding code of conduct. “The current voluntary ethics code is weak and self-enforced…Every other federal judge is bound by an enforceable code of conduct.” He does not go as far as the Rep. Adam Schiff-led new effort to expand the court by four members. creating a 13 member court.
