Massive Second Quarter Propels Meridian Boys Over Fauquier on Friday

Fresh off of an absolute dismantling of Brentsville on the road Thursday night, the Meridian High School boys’ basketball team returned to Falls Church to host Fauquier for some Friday hoops action – and they had no intentions of slowing down. Despite still missing starting big man Grant Greiner and also losing winger John Lyman to an injury, the Mustangs rolled over their competition once again.

Daylen Martino, who has emerged as the star of the show in his sophomore season, opened the scoring with a deep three-pointer and Meridian raced out to a 19-9 advantage after a quarter. Then after Fauquier had cut the deficit to 21-13, a 17-0 run by the home team ensued, consisting of some of the most flawless basketball on both ends of the floor that you will ever see. The Mustangs used their vicious defensive press and feasted on the fast break, while also finding excellent looks in the halfcourt offense and executing with precision. Meridian took a 46-21 lead into the halftime break, all but assuring they’d improve their perfect record this season to 7-0.

Fauquier made a few second half runs to get back within as few as 18, but the Mustangs never let them gain too much momentum and then pulled away in the final frame to win by a decisive margin of 76-47. Martino had 28 points to lead the way while Jarrett Jardine added 19, ten of which came during that dominant second quarter.

Meridian will now be off until after winter break, and will return to the floor on January 3rd at home against Manassas Park.
