Peter Laub, associate principal at Meridian High School in Falls Church, sent out a letter to parents and the community tonight upon the discovery that a swastika symbol was found displayed at the high school
The following is the text of Laub’s letter:
Dear Meridian Families,
I am reaching out to address a deeply concerning incident that took place in one of our classrooms. Your safety, well-being, and sense of belonging are paramount to us.
On Wednesday, October 11, a swastika sticker made from painter’s tape was discovered on the side of a desk in a Meridian classroom. This symbol, universally recognized as one of hate and prejudice, is in direct opposition to the values we uphold at Meridian and FCCPS. We understand the gravity of this discovery, especially in light of recent distressing events abroad. I am deeply saddened and frustrated that we are here once again.
I want to assure you that we are taking immediate steps:
My administrative team is conducting a thorough investigation. We urge anyone with information to please come forward either anonymously utilizing this form or by reaching out directly to administrators or a member of our counseling staff.
In the forthcoming days, we will address our students to reinforce our zero-tolerance policy regarding hate-based messages and images to our student body and community. Our actions are guided by Policy JFHA/GBA Prohibition Against Harassment and Retaliation, developed in collaboration with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. We encourage everyone to familiarize themselves with this policy.
As always, please don’t hesitate to contact our administrative team if you have any questions.
We stand firmly against any form of hate or discrimination. To our Jewish students and families and all of our Mustang community: You are valued, loved, and welcome at Meridian. Please don’t hesitate to contact our administrative team with any concerns or questions.
