Cherry Hill Park, home to several important City functions throughout the year and the historic Cherry Hill Farmhouse, doesn’t have much competition in terms of what is the best park in the City. So, we eliminated it from contention. Now, out of the 11 parks that are located in the City of Falls Church that aren’t named Cherry Hill Park, West End Park is the newest looking. But that’s not why it’s the best park that’s not located on Park Avenue.

In large part, it’s that West End Park has a mini skate park. For this writer, who was an aggressive inline skater in his younger years, the opening of any sort of skate park is a triumph. But it took a truly grassroots effort on the part of several concerned adults and skaters in the Little City to bring the skate park located in West End Park to fruition. When the park reopened in the late summer of 2015, it was definitely fresh, with a brand spanking new facade to punctuate the renovation of the park. The skate park, though, gives the entire park an urban edge that’s kind of missing from the rest of the City.

Located between major commercial, residential and commuter areas of the City, West End Park plays an important role in terms of giving the community a space to congregate. It’s small enough to be intimate and large enough for several parties to commune. And did I mention that it has a skate park?
