F.C. Students Shine in NoVa Mathcounts Competition

Several students from Falls Church competed in and won the Northern Virginia Regional Mathcounts competition for the Northern Virginia chapter on Saturday, Feb. 6 at George Mason University. A team from Longfellow Middle School, coached by Mary Jo Clark, and a team from Haycock Elementary School, also coached by Mary Jo Clark, came in first and second place, respectively, in the Northern Virginia chapter competition.

The students compete as teams and individuals in the competition. The team from Longfellow, Ben Kang, Nicole Sim, Alex Chung and Larry Shi, came in the first through fourth place, respectively in the individual competition. Haycock Elementary School’s team consisted of Joaquim Das, William Jiang, Owen Rollins and Lillian Sun.

The teams from Longfellow and Haycock move on to compete in the Virginia State Mathcounts competition. The members of the Longfellow team will also compete individually in the state competition, which is scheduled for March 19 in Glen Allen, Va. For more information, visit mathcounts.org.
