Scholastic Bowl
The 2A East Region Scholastic Bowl tournament was held Saturday, Feb. 6 at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton. The team first defeated Buffalo Gap, breaking open a close game with a great final round to win 280-110. They then played Robert E. Lee and maintained a small lead resulting in a 235-190 win. National quiz bowl powerhouse Maggie Walker prevailed in the next round, by a 285-150 score.
Mason then awaited the winner of the remaining one-loss teams to determine who they would have to play to reach the finals, and earn a spot to the state tournament. Robert E. Lee High School prevailed over Goochlandand advance to face the Mustangs. In the rematch, the Mustangs racked up a much bigger margin in winning 255-140 to clinch a return trip to the state tournament.
The final match pitted the Mustangs once again against Maggie Walker for the tournament title. After a great Mason start, surprisingly jumping out to a 60-25 lead, Maggie Walker dominated the rest of the way for a big win, 370-90.
The Mustangs finished as region runners-up to Maggie Walker Governor’s School, therefore qualifying the team for the state tournament that will be held at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg on Saturday, Feb.27.
Hockey
Last Friday, George Mason Hockey faced off against West Springfield High School, coming out with a 6-4 win. After the fast paced game Junior Center Mackenzie Steeves commented “Big plays, big hits, and recent games gave us the motivation to come out with the win.”
Mason Hockey’s played Potomac High School on Wednesday, Feb. 10 but results of the match were not available at press time.
Boys Junior Varsity Basketball
The Mustangs finished their final week of the season with three wins, completing a near perfect record on the season with only one loss back in mid-December to Central High School.
On Wednesday, Feb. 3 the Mustangs trampled Rappahannock County High School 68-35. Two days later, they handled Clarke County High School in a 59-41 defeat of the Eagles.
Madison County High School traveled to Falls Church for the Mustangs’ final game of the regular season on Tuesday, Feb. 9. The Mustangs won that match 65-50. Because they only lost once to Central, who finished the season with six district losses, Mason is this year’s Bull Run District champion for boys junior varsity basketball.
Girls Junior Varsity Basketball
The Mustangs lost their final game of the season on Tuesday, Feb. 9 to Madison County High School by a score of 23-20.
On Thursday, Feb. 4 the Mustangs defeated Bull Run District rival Clarke County High School 43-40. That win was the fourth in a win streak Mason enjoyed towards the end of the season. After a rough start to the season, the Mustangs finished the season with a 9-8 record.
