After completing a successful regular season George Mason High School’s varsity field hockey team fell in the opening round of the region 4A West playoffs on Monday night 6-1 to Poguoson High School. The team put up a valiant effort against Poquoson in southeast Virginia.
Senior Caroline Duffett started in net and Junior Hannah Hiscott took over for part of the second half. Junior Sarah Lubnow scored the lone Mason goal with 9:07 left in the game. As a sign of respect Coach Amanda Crider played the entire senior graduating class the last six minutes.
The Mustangs punched their ticket to the regional playoffs by reaching the conference 22 championship, where they lost to Western Ablemarle High School 1-0 in overtime. They beat Liberty High School in the opening round of the conference tournament on October 26 by a 3-0 margin and then defeated Kettle Run High School 2-1 the next day in the conference semifinals.
Mason’s defeat in the opening round of the region 4A West playoffs concluded the team’s most successful season. The team’s record of 15-4 was a slight improvement over the 2014 season, in which the team achieved a 13-5 record. Two seasons ago, the Mustangs finished with a 2-12 record.
