A 22-year-old Stafford man was arrested in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Feb. 4, after ramming a Fairfax County police cruiser with his Honda Coupe during a police pursuit. At about 12:40 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a Fairfax County officer driving a police cruiser initiated a traffic stop on a 2006 Honda Coupe for a traffic violation near Lee Highway and Hollywood Road in the Falls Church-area of Fairfax County.
Police say that the driver of the Honda, Avery Q. Mason, disregarded the officer’s signal to stop and fled onto I-495 South. At I-495 near I-95, Mason allegedly intentionally rammed the officer’s cruiser.
According to a news release about the incident, the officer brought the chase to an end utilizing the Precision Immobilization Technique – a maneuver invented by the Fairfax County police department which is used to cause a driver fleeing the police to tailspin – and Mason was taken into custody. Both Mason and the pursuing officer were transported to a local hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
Mason was charged with felony speed to elude, driving while intoxicated, attempted malicious wounding to law enforcement, two counts of felony destruction of property and felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
