West End Park Upgrade OK’d

Delayed by the recession from original plans designed in 2005, the $528,000 renovation of the City of Falls Church’s West End Park on the north side of W. Broad St in the shadow of the W&OD Trail Bike Bridge was approved unanimously by the F.C. City Council Monday. F.C. Rec and Parks chief Danny Schlitt said the plan to name the park for Harry English, the long-time unofficial “Mayor of Grove Avenue.”

There will be a rain garden and bio-retention area, and opposition to a skate park on the site evaporated when former Vice Mayor Lindy Hockenberry advocated for it on behalf of middle school-aged kids and sixth grader Sam Klemic and eighth grader Nicholas Zengler spoke in favor.
