In a proclamation by the Falls Church City Council honoring the life of U.S. Army Major General Harold J. Greene, a City of Falls Church resident, signed by Mayor David Tarter at Monday’s meeting, noted that “Major General Greene, of Falls Church, made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country when he died in the line of duty while serving as deputy commanding general, Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, on Aug. 5 in Kabul, Afghanistan.”
According to the proclamation, Major General Greene, a native of Albany, New York, was commissioned as an engineer officer in the Army in 1980 after earning an undergraduate degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., and his 34-year career in the U.S. Army earned him a reputation as a strong leader with a sense of humility who inspired those around him.
Major General Greene’s awards included the Legion of Merit Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal.
He was a “well-liked member of the Falls Church community and a fixture in his neighborhood, known for his morning runs, who will be greatly missed by his wife, Susan, children Matthew and Amelia, and family members, friends and fellow soldiers.”
