Alice M. Rooney, 101, a longtime resident of Falls Church, closed her eyes for the last time on July 4, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.

Alice was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Marywood College and received her Master of Science degree from American University. She taught chemistry and was head of the science department at George Mason High School for over 25 years. She guided many of her students to become professionals in the field of science. At her 100th Year Celebration of Life Birthday, she heard from many students thanking her for her support and belief in their dreams.

Alice is survived by three loving daughters, Mary (Patrick) Kennedy of Skaneateles, New York, Kay (Jack) Larmer of McLean, Alicia (Greg) Yowell of Port Republic, Maryland; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. All who knew her were deeply saddened at her passing. She had a way of making every relationship special and unique. Her lifelong quest for learning, and her strong determination, independence, and great sense of humor were an inspiration to all who knew her as a mother, nana, great-grandmother “GG,” aunt, teacher, mentor, and friend.

The family extends a special thank you to the caring staff at The Athenaeum of Skaneateles in New York who made her end of life so loving. Alice died on Independence Day. How fitting for such an independent woman who was way before her time? Her favorite saying “where there is a will, there is a way” will be remembered by all who were blessed to know her.
