Mason Girls Boost District Hoops Win Streak to 9

By Drew Costley

George Mason High School’s girls varsity basketball team extended its win streak against district opponents to nine games, but lost its first regular-season game in nine games in the past week.

The Mustangs (11-5, 9-1) beat Manassas Park High School 60-20 last Thursday. They beat the Cougars (2-11, 2-9) earlier this season 72-5.

The Mustangs traveled to Woodgrove High School last Saturday for a rematch against the Wolverines, to whom they lost 53-42. The Wolverines won an early season matchup against the Mustangs 59-54 in Mason’s only home loss of the season.

On Monday, the Mustangs played Madison County High School (5-10, 3-7) and beat the Mountaineers 65-33. The Mustangs and the Mountaineers have a rematch set for early February in the final regular season home game for Mason.

As of press time, the Mustangs hold a half-game lead over both Clarke County High School and Warren County High School. Both rivals are 9-2 in the Bull Run District standings and both have lost to George Mason once. The Mustangs hold a whole-game lead over Central High School. Central is 7-3 against district opponents.

The Mustangs’ matchup against William Monroe High School was postponed to tonight due inclement weather. They travel to Central tonight to play the Falcons and play Rappahannock County High School at home next Tuesday.
