The Mason boys varsity tennis team won a close game at home against Brentsville District High School Tuesday, 5-4, adding another win to their now 10-1 record.
Earning the five points that won Mason the game were Karl Campanella-Dysart, Tommy Weber and Daniel Fletcher in singles matches and the Weber/Campanella-Dysart and Nate Jones/Fletcher teams in doubles matches.
In a long, hard-fought match, Campanella-Dysart tied his singles opponent at 10-10, coming from behind at 7-9. In the tiebreaker, Campanella-Dysart won 7-2 and earned his team a much needed point.
“Campanella-Dysart won in the tie breaker with a gutsy performance staying offensive minded instead of letting Brentsville control the point during the long rallies,” Coach Matt Sowers said.
First- and second-seeded players Kan Tagami and Jay Rodock were defeated in the singles match by senior members of the Brentsville team. They were also defeated by the duo when they played against them in a doubles match.
“Both seniors, Sean Lee and Greg Mohl from Brensville, played a very consistent match against Tagami and Rodock, having very few unforced errors (mental mistakes) or double faults to give away free points,” Sowers said.
Fletcher, a first for the season, was named man of the match for his 10-3 singles match victory and his doubles win.
While Sowers said the team performed well against Brentsville, he still sees room for improvement to keep the Mustangs winning.
“We still need to work on our footwork to put ourselves into a better offensive position to control rallies from either the return of serve or service games,” Sowers said. “Our top-seeded players did have more difficulty gaining a lead and holding their own serve.”
The Brentsville win came after the team’s April 27 victory at home over Heritage High School, where they kept their opponents scoreless, 6-0. Because of rain delay, no doubles matches were played, but Tagami, Rodock, Campanella-Dysart, Weber, Jones and Fletcher all won their singles matches.
The team takes on Clarke County High School tomorrow at 5 p.m. in an away game, and plays Episcopal High School May 10 at 4 p.m. on the road. For Sowers, the games will pose a challenge that he is looking forward to facing with his team.
“I welcome the challenge from both squads,” Sowers said. “I know that Clarke County High School had a record posted at 0-9, while Episcopal High School is having another great season with a winning record. I always enjoy scheduling Episcopal High School because Episcopal historically always puts together a highly competitive squad.”
