Local Artist Honored for Work in Art, Education

Falls Church artist and art teacher Carolyn Grossé Gawarecki was honored by her alma mater, Douglass College in New Brunswick, N.J.

 

Falls Church artist and art teacher Carolyn Grossé Gawarecki was honored by her alma mater, Douglass College in New Brunswick, N.J. She was one of three alumnae of this women’s division of Rutgers University inducted into its prestigious Douglass Society. Her citation read “For outstanding contributions in art and education.”

Gawarecki is the recipient of well over 150 awards locally and nationally, including the Grumbacher Gold Medal. Her latest award was Best in Show at the Potomac Valley Watercolorists exhibit Oct. 30.

After moving with her husband to Colorado in 1957, she returned to the Washington area in 1963 to reside in Falls Church where she began teaching watercolor painting for the Falls Church Recreation Department and later at the Art League School. She retired from formal art teaching this year after 47 years working for the city at the Recreation Department.
