A team of fifth-grade students from Belvedere Elementary School in Falls Church will travel to Linthicum, Md., to participate in a qualifying match for You Can Do the Cube, a competition to see which team can solve 25 scrambled Rubik’s Cubes in the least amount of time.

The Belvedere students are hoping to be one of six teams to qualify for the national competition to take place this weekend on the national mall as part of the USA Science and Engineering Festival. Belvedere students participate in the Rubik’s Cube Club, open to all students in grades 3 – 5 who are interested in solving the Rubik’s Cube puzzle. They meet weekly to discuss strategies, share ideas, and practice solving the cube. The program infuses math language in an exciting, challenging way and bolsters self esteem as the students become more successful in solving the puzzle.
