One of the first businesses to open in the plaza of the Spectrum at 450 W. Broad Street, Spectrum Cleaners owned by the South Korean native Lee family has won the hearts and business of a steady stream of regular customers.

The entire family has been working together from the start, though Yeon Mee Lee is most often behind the counter, a friendly, smiling face that greets everyone who comes through the door, from the mailman to the most demanding client.

“I am very happy with our business here,” she says. The business offers dry cleaning, shirt laundry, alterations, shoe repair, wedding gown cleaning and preservation, leather cleaning and repair, rug cleaning, and same day service for dry cleaning and shirt laundering if brought in by 9 a.m.

Opening the location in 2005 following owning a children’s wear store, Yeon Mee has enjoyed much trust and faith from her customers, some of whom drop off their clothes without even waiting for a receipt. Yeon Mee is joined by husband John C. Lee and daughters Rachel, an art student at the Pratt Institute in New York now working in the summer, and Esther. Rachel is responsible for all the creative signage in the store. “I smile when I see my customers,” Yeon Mee says. The business won the “Excellence in Customer Service” award from the City of Falls Church’s Economic Development Office in 2007.

The family has been in the D.C. Metro area since coming from South Korea to the U.S. 21 years ago.
