Catherine Breen, a student at George Mason High School in Falls Church, was one of the 48 rising seniors in Virginia selected to participate in the Virginia Aerospace and Technology Scholars (VASTS) academy.

The academy was hosted by NASA Langley in a partnership with Virginia Space and Grant Consortium, and was held at NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., from June 26 – July 2.

Prior to the academy, Breen completed a six-month interactive distance-learning program on aerospace exploration which prepared her for the intensive week.

At the academy, Breen built, programmed and tested robots. She also toured the NASA facilities and spoke with NASA researchers.

VASTS is a competitive program that allows high school juniors the opportunity to engage in an online NASA-based course. Applications for the 2010-2011 program will be available Sept. 1 and will be due Nov. 5. For more information, visit www.vasts.spacegrant.org.
