
On Monday, May 17, in the pouring rain, the George Mason High School varsity girls lacrosse team defeated the Freedom High Eagles 13-7 in a Dulles District semifinal playoff game. With the win, the Mustangs advanced to the Dulles District championship.
With Monday’s playoff win, Mason improved to 15-0 for the year, a mark which is a record for the relatively new program.
Against Freedom, the Mustangs jumped out to a 9-4 halftime lead, but the Eagles started the second half with two quick goals to narrow the gap to 9-6.
Mason was able to score the next four points and build an insurmountable lead, though, and the Mustangs finished the contest up six.
Senior center Gwen Edwards had five goals and two assists in the game, junior defender and mid-fielder Abby Johansen had three goals and three dimes, senior attack Taylor Bottock contributed two goals and an assist, senior midfielder Courtney Ready added two goals, and junior mid-fielder Vanessa Mann had one goal and an assist.
Senior defender Katrina Snyder made a key interception in front of the opposing goal early in the game, and she also led in ground balls with four, followed by Johansen’s three, and senior goalie Meghan Powell made nine saves.
