Falls Church H.S. Premieres ‘Working’ Tonight
Falls Church High School’s spring play, “Working,” premieres tonight, Thursday, April 29 at 7:30 p.m., with same-time performances on Friday, April 30 and Saturday, May 1 too. Penned by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso, “Working” is based on the book of the same name by Studs Turkel that tracks a single day in the lives of 26 average American workers.

MEH Pasta Dinner Helps Haiti Friday
Those interested are reminded that tomorrow, Friday, April 30, is the Mary Ellen Henderson (MEH) Middle School Student Council Association (SCA) Haiti Relief Pasta Dinner from 6 – 8 p.m. in the school cafeteria (7130 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church). Marshall H.S.’s Kolbe Wins Merit Scholarship
Kelsey Kolbe of George C. Marshall High School was one of 18 Fairfax County Public Schools students to be awarded corporate-sponsored scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Under the category of acting or diplomatic service, Kolbe was given the National Merit BP Foundation, Inc. Scholarship.
F.C. Students Advance to History Day Competition
Six Falls Church City Schools students are advancing to the National History Day competition in College Park, Md. in June.
They are among eleven students from Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School (MEHMS) and George Mason High School (GMHS) who successfully competed in the second round of the National History Day state competition last week.
First-place honors went to Sarah Miller (MEHMS) and Crystal Luo (GMHS) in the Historical Paper category. Other winners from GMHS include Fae Montgomery and Honora Overby, who won first place for their performance. Jessica Kemp and Alissa Forbes earned second-place honors for their historical exhibit. Third-place honors went to Calder Hannan in the Historical Paper category, and to Scott Connuck, Sarah Devlin, Liam O’Connell and Meredith Brindley for their documentary.
All first- and second-place winners will advance to the national competition.
GMHS Chinese II Students Tops in the Region
Students in George Mason High School’s Chinese II language class are tops in the region for the second year in a row, bringing home first-place awards in last week’s Northern Virginia Modern Foreign Language Tournament. First-place honors went to Elsie Poon and Benjaminn Tran for their Chinese original skit; and to Brian Highman, Joe Reich and Reilly Culhoone for their Chinese dramatic interpretation.
In the French 5 competition, Katie Buenneke finished in third place in the Oral Interpretation of Poetry non-native category. And in the Spanish 2 competition, Lilly Constance earned third-place honors for Spanish Oral Interpretation of Poetry.
The students competed under the direction of faculty sponsors Tina Kao, Chin Mah and Suzanne Planas.
Highlanders Orchestra Cleans Cars for Cash
The McLean High School (MHS) Orchestra will hold a spring car wash fundraiser this Saturday, May 1 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Giant (1445 Chain Bridge Rd., McLean) parking lot. This is the last major orchestra fundraising event of the school year. For more information, call 703-714-5700.

The J.E.B. McLean, Oakton H.S. Win Pacemaker Awards
McLean and Oakton High Schools recently joined the ranks of those local schools to receive a National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Pacemaker Awards at the recent Journalism Education Association (JEA)/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention held in Portland, Ore.
McLean High’s The Clan won a Pacemaker Award in the category for yearbooks of 289-352 pages. Lydia Mendelson, Katie Phelan, Alyssa Rajabi, and Scott Richardson are editors; Meghan Percival is the advisor. This is The Clan’s first Pacemaker Award.
Oakton High’s Oakton Outlook won a Pacemaker Award for Online Newspapers in schools with 1,500 or greater enrollment. Koorosh Massoudi is the editor; Chad Rummel is the advisor. This is the first Pacemaker Award for the online version of Oakton Outlook. The Oakton Outlook also won Best in Show in the Newsmagazine and Publication Web Site categories. Falls Church H.S. Students Honored at Kennedy Center
The National Society of Arts and Letters Washington, D.C. Chapter Awards for Excellence in the Arts were held last week at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. High school juniors from 30 area schools were recognized for their accomplishments in the disciplines of art, literature, dance, drama, music and musical theater. Honored students from Falls Church High School were: Sam Johnson, Award of Excellence in Drama; Tiffany Camp, Certificate of Merit in Art; Bridget Olson, Certificate of Merit in Music and Hayden Workman, Certificate of Merit in Music.
McLean H.S. Dances into Spring
The McLean High School (1633 Davidson Rd., McLean) Dance Department will present its Spring Dance Concert on Friday, May 14 in the school’s auditorium, it was announced this week. The performance begins at 7 p.m. and is inclusive of student choreography and a new work created by Guest Teacher Esperonto Bean, a professional dancer/choreographer.
