Lady Statesmen Trump Highlanders in Overtime, 9-7

George C. Marshall High School’s girls varsity lacrosse team overtook crosstown rival McLean, 9-7, in overtime Monday.

Marshall senior Mallory Grant and sophomore Rachel Waldron each tallied hat tricks, while sophomore Natasha Glennie scored a pair and sophomore Anna Greenwood added one. Sophomore goalie Meredith Crizer made 14 stops for the Statesmen.

“[We] fought hard to come from behind, and we tied up the game by end of regulation play,” said McLean Head Coach Anne Inzerello. “Although the girls couldn’t pull out a win in the end, they worked hard and played to the finish.”

In a losing cause, Highlander sophomore Rummer Bershstein scored a hat trick and caused a turnover. Sophomore Mackenzie May scored two goals, an assist and a caused turnover, while fellow sophomore Carlyle Howard added a goal. Junior Nina Zegler had a strong game with a goal, an interception and three groundballs. Senior Hanna Longwell served in the net for the game, making 27 saves for McLean.

Next up for the Lady Statesmen (2-2) is Yorktown at home on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. The Highlanders (2-4) face off against Stone Bridge in McLean’s home opener at 7:15 p.m. this Friday, April 9.
