Mason’s Scholastic Bowl Faces Another Wintry Delay, Still on for Regionals

Recent inclement weather has pushed back George Mason High’s Scholastic Bowl team’s appearance at the Bull Run District tournament, originally scheduled for last Saturday, Jan. 30.

Now, with another storm predicted to delay extracurricular events this Saturday, the Mason team’s coach, teacher Jamie Scharff, told the News-Press that district athletic directors are discussing contingency plans.

Despite logistics issues at the district level, Scarff said the team is scheduled to tackle Region B competition at the tournament the following Saturday, Feb. 13. The regional tournament will be held at Randolph-Henry High School in Charlotte County, Va. “We are already guaranteed a spot due to our regular season first place finish,” Scharff explained.

Scharff said the top two teams from regionals will advance to the state tournament held at the College of William and Mary on Feb. 27. He noted Mason’s team has made it to eight consecutive state tournaments, “the longest [record] of all group A schools.”

The Mason Scholastic Bowl team finished their regular season with a spotless 15-0. For game summaries of the team’s meets, check out results online at www.masonathletics.org.
