Local Filmmaker Competes In Rosebud Film Festival
Cal Slater, 17, a recent graduate of the Howard Gardner School, is vying for honors at the 19th annual Rosebud Film and Video Festival, to be held Saturday, June 27, at Rosslyn’s Spectrum Theatre.

Bishop Ireton Wins Four Cappies at Annual Gala
Bishop Ireton High School won four Cappie awards for its production of Romeo and Juliet at the gala at the Kennedy Center on Sunday, June 7. The winners include Emily O’Connell, Meghan Palmer, Emilia Lynch, Gabrielle Kuhn, Anne-Elisabeth Halbert, Carolyn Darville, Sean Crook, Jordan Dively, Adam Santalla, Andrew Ferguson and Jake Gaudet.
Kokolopori Presentation Comes to F.A. McGonegal
Albert Lokasola, a visitor from the Democratic Republic of Congo, will talk, share photos and answer questions about Falls Church’s Sister City. This free program will take place at the F.A. McGonegal Showroom (212 N. West St., Falls Church) on Wednesday, July 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Sister City partnership between Falls Church and Kokolopori offers many enriching opportunities for global citizenship to both communities. People in Falls Church and other urban areas benefit from rainforest conservation efforts by Kokolopori and other communities like it. Residents of Kokolopori benefit from international attention and support.

Volunteers for Change, a unique volunteer program for adults, is holding orientations for interested community members. Local Scout Earns National And State Awards
Eagle Scout Taylor Christian Demeter recently received the Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting’s National Scout of the Year Award. The committee’s vote was unanimous in all four categories: scouting, community service, religious service and academics. Demeter also was selected first runner-up for the Virginia Department Scout of the Year. He is the most highly decorated scout in the Falls Church Presbyterian Church sponsored Troop 895’s 50-year history.

The following local students were recently named to Northeastern University’s dean’s list for the 2009 spring semester: Colleen C. Mitchell of Arlington and Ellen Wilson of Falls Church.
Anna K. Massaro and Michael Anthony Nadeau of Falls Church have been named to the spring semester dean’s list at Radford University.
Andrew K. Parker of Falls Church has been named to the dean’s list at the University of the South for the Easter 2009 term.
Klee Simmons of Falls Church made the dean’s list for the spring semester at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
Some 2,240 students were awarded a variety of bachelor’s degrees during the University of Vermont’s 205th Commencement ceremonies on May 17. A list of the local students are as follows: Matthew McLaughlin of Annandale, Meredith Bessette of Arlington, Cristina Haines of Arlington, Matthew Gough of Arlington and Lucy Walsh of Alexandria.

Elizabeth Miller of Falls Church was among 692 students who participated in St. Olaf College’s 120th commencement ceremony on May 24.
Virginian Wins AARP National Spelling Bee
AARP crowned Michael Petrina Jr., 64, of Arlington, the winner of its National Spelling Bee. Petrina won the championship by correctly spelling “woad” and out-spelled 45 other spellers from more than 25 states who competed in the record-breaking Bee that lasted 46 rounds.
F.C. Victorian Society to Host Afternoon Tea
The Victorian Society of Falls Church is hosting an afternoon tea at Falls Church Presbyterian Church (225 E. Broad St., Falls Church) from 2 – 4 p.m. that will include savories, scones and sweets. It will also feature the Chanticleer Singers performing the songs of “the father of American music” by Civil War era songwriter, Stephen Foster. Admission is $35 per person.
