George C. Marshall’s girls varsity tennis team finished their postseason play with a strong appearance at Tuesday’s quarterfinals of the AAA state tournament held in Richmond.

Marshall faced reigning state champion Mills Godwin High.

“We came confident that we could match up with their lineup, and we did,” said Marshall’s coach, Robin Crider, in an e-mail to the News-Press.

In singles play, Marshall’s number one seed, freshman Faby Chaillo, remained undefeated.

Number two Ana Dominguez, number five Sarah Doan and number six seed Kelly Crider lost their respective matches, but Marshall was able to tie at 2-2. The momentum was not enough to turn the matches in Marshall’s favor. With number three Lauren Hopwood and number four Amanda Crider falling in their tough three setters, Mills Godwin had the upper hand, 4-2, going into doubles play.

Mills Godwin scored its victory, 5-2, after defeating Astrid Adam and Kelly Crider.

Despite their team’s loss, Chaillo and Dominguez advance to the AAA state individual tournament from June 4 – 6, to be held at Jefferson Park, Richmond. Chaillo will play in the single competition, and then will team up with Dominguez for doubles.
