Top of the District, McLean Softball Beats Marshall

Coming off two big wins against South Lakes last week, McLean High School’s varsity softball team, number one in the Liberty District, were in position to take on George C. Marshall High on May 1.

Coming off two big wins against South Lakes last week, McLean High School’s varsity softball team, number one in the Liberty District, were in position to take on George C. Marshall High on May 1. After a hard fought game, the Lady Highlanders trounced the Marshall Statesmen, 6-1.

The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning when McLean had its first three batters walked. With bases loaded, freshman right fielder Mary Spulak hit a double for a two run, two RBI.

Bottom of the fourth for Marshall, junior catcher Michelle Tilson singled, junior first baseman Lauren Sanata walked and junior pitcher Christine Grilliot singled to score Tilson. The inning ended 2-1 with McLean in the lead.

Top of the seventh, Spulak lead off with a single, with freshman DH Allison Wilhelm sacrificing bunt, sophomore pitcher Jamie Bell single and junior short stop Lauren McColgan bunted scoring Spulak on a queeze play. Junior second baseman Brittany McCray followed suit, bunt scoring Bell on a squeeze play. Sutherland singled with one RBI. McLean scored four runs.

Bell pitched for McLean, allowing five hits, and Grilliot pitched for Marshall, allowing seven.

The Lady Highlanders improved their record to 11-1 in the district and 18-3 overall. The girls will face Langley High tomorrow, May 8, in an away game at 6:30 p.m. It will be their last regular season game before entering district play next week.
