Marshall Academy’s NA students to learn directly from IT pros
Level 2 students at Marshall Academy, based at George C. Marshall High School, Network Administration class will participate in a job shadow day at the Department of Veterans Affairs regional office in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, Feb. 5.
Ten students will tour the offices to observe how professionals in information technology perform their jobs.
Local Fairfax School Web Sites Earn Awards
The Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Department of Communications and Community Outreach has named winners of the quarterly WebStar Awards for outstanding school web sites. Both Kent Gardens Elementary, Rebecca Boyer, curator and Longfellow Middle, Mary Reid, curator won awards for their web sites. WebStar Awards are given quarterly to three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school that best demonstrate the following criteria: usefulness of content, clarity of design, frequency of updates, ease of navigation, and adherence to FCPS web policies.
Stuart H.S. Student Wins Essay Contest
Risham Tariq, a student at J.E.B. Stuart High School, is one of seven winners in the Strong Men and Women: Excellence in Leadership student writing contest sponsored by Dominion, one of the nation’s largest energy producers. High school juniors and seniors in Virginia, North Carolina and Ohio were invited to write essays about an African American leader featured in the company’s Strong Men and Women series. As a winner, Tariq receives a laptop computer and her school receives a $1,000 cash award.
Marshall High School Designated a ‘Silver Medal School’ by US News and World Report
George C. Marshall High School has been designated a “Silver Medal School” by US News & World Report. Silver Medal high schools meet the specific criteria which include college readiness, proficiency on standardized state tests, as well as student participation in and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) exams.
Marshall High School has also placed as the highest ranked IB school in the Washington metropolitan region. Students at Marshall High School took the highest number of IB exams in the history of their school, 927, an increase from 751 exams in 2007. Seventy students earned the IB Diploma.
Two FCPS Students Named Intel Science Talent Search Finalists
Two students from Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) are among 40 nationwide who have been named finalists in the 2009 Intel Science Talent Search. The FCPS students and their projects are Narendra Tallapragada of Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (TJHSST): “Determining the Dielectric Function for Crystalline Solids From the ‘Bottom Up,’ Using Atomic, Ionic, and Molecular Properties” and Alexander Kim of TJHSST: “Morphological and Molecular Phylogeography of a Giant American River Prawn, Macrobrachium carcinus.”
The Intel Science Talent Search challenges students to select and investigate scientific questions and develop the skills necessary to solve the problems of tomorrow. The finalists’ independent research projects include topics such as human-seeking robots, revitalizing ecosystems affected by wildfires, implications of gender on stem cell transplants, climate change, and potential cures for Parkinson’s disease and cancer.
Each finalist has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship and a new laptop computer. In March, finalists will compete in a week-long institute in Washington D.C., with 38 other finalists from around the country for the top prize, a $100,000 scholarship
Falls Church High School Mulch Sale
Falls Church High School (FCHS) has kicked off its annual mulch sale, to raise money for the school’s All-Night Graduation Celebration. This is an annual fundraiser, organized by parents, which provides the FCHS graduating Seniors a safe, alcohol- and drug-free all night graduation celebration on one of the riskiest nights of the year for them. This celebration costs over $20,000 each year,
Our biggest fundraising event is the annual spring Mulch Sale. The deadline for orders is Monday, March 23 and the pick-up/delivery date is Saturday, March 28.
